Petit Món House
We’ve been working for three years on several initiatives abroad and now we want to launch new projects to help locally. The first comes with the acquisition of a property in Barcelona for social use.
The aim is to make the building the Petit Món House a place to offer accommodation for families temporarily displaced as a result of the hospitalization of their children or close relatives, in a local hospital.
The hospitalization of a child is always a destabilization of family life. If we add the geographic displacement and the economic costs, the emotional wear is much bigger.
To help families cope with this situation, the Petit Món House offers the families the possibility of having a place to rest, sleep, cook and do their laundry and also withdraw from the hospital environment and, at the same time, leading a normal family life and keep in touch with other families who are in a similar situation.
We want the Petit Món House to be a place where both families and children can feel at home and to be able to face the hospital treatment under the best possible conditions and without additional costs.
We accommodate families who are in need in coordination with the Social Welfare Services and institutions with which we have established partnerships agreements (San Joan de Déu Hospital, Clínic Hospital, Vall d’Hebron Hospital and Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital…) and with other Ngos such as Adda, Infancia Solidaria and NPH (Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos).
We can host up to 10 families at the same time. A total of 22 people. Considering an average stay of two weeks, our expectations are to support more than 200 families annually.
We have conditioned 4 floors of the building. Two of them are apartments with two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and living room, designed for a family of four or two families of two. The other two floors are larger, three bedrooms with their own bathroom where different families share cooking services and dining-room. The house is located in c/Torrent de l’Olla, 49.
The situation in the district of Gràcia, good communications of public transport and proximity to major hospitals, make the house an ideal place for families.
We have a person dedicated to the project. She is responsible of the reception of families, of giving the keys, explaining the rules, cleaning and maintaining the facilities.
The main expenses of the project are the provision of water, electricity and gas as well as cleaning, maintenance and tools of the apartments, expenses covered by the Foundation with donations from benefiting families and entities with whom we collaborate.
“Everyone is trying to accomplish something big, not realizing that life is made up of little things”
Start: March 2011.
Coordinator: Petit Món.
Comments: We started with the rehabilitation and the adaptation of the house’s facilities. We set up cooperation agreements with different referral hospitals. The house was opened in June 2013, although since April we already had an apartment in operation on trial. Since then, several families have been staying at the house.
